Warlock changes: whose damage benefits, which demon stays and what costs less

WoW Scroll · Existing class artworkWarlock: three changes worth reading together.

The recipient of a bonus matters as much as its size. Separate personal effects from group-facing debuffs.

Your Warlock field guide

Choose how you want to play.

Balance your health, mana and demon so sustained pressure does not turn into an avoidable recovery stop.

Early beta · Starting plans for level 20

What we would play, and why.

Our early priority is sustainable damage with a demon that suits the pull. The demo makes pet builds worth investigating, but it does not settle which pet or specialization wins in the beta.

The strongest-looking demon still needs a fair comparison

Compare pets on the same enemies with similar gear and commands. Include how much damage you take and how often you must recover, not only the demon’s contribution. A pet that keeps a dangerous target off you may be the better questing choice even when another has the larger damage number.

Spread damage only after the tank can hold it

We would establish damage on the group’s kill target before spreading to the rest. Short-lived targets may not repay the mana spent applying another effect. In solo play, keep Fear’s path clear so a recovery tool does not become the next pull.

Three trees. Different possibilities.

  4. Soul HarvestingLevel 20 · 1/2 points

Make Corruption instant, improve the health-to-mana trade, then add accuracy and a Drain Soul recovery option.

When to choose differently: Treat Soul Harvesting as a flexible final point. Its recovery condition matters when other players finish your targets.

Trade resources deliberately

Life Tap is part of your resource plan, not a reason to stay at dangerous health. Recover before a patrol or second target can join the fight.

Let effects finish the job

Match damage-over-time investment to the target’s remaining health. Keep your demon engaged and avoid paying for damage that never gets to tick.

Watch the fear path

Fear can create breathing room but can also move an enemy toward another pack. Clear space and inspect patrols before relying on it.

Choose a route that suits your toolkit

Better pulls before longer journeys.

Use outdoor space where you can see patrols and your demon’s path. In a crowded cave, choose smaller pulls rather than assuming a fear or pet command will produce a safe exit.

  1. Opening journeyYour starting region

Finish nearby quest clusters and check trainer / profession stops. Blizzard is adding stories and profession hooks to existing starting areas.

  2. Opening beta · up to 20Try the next local hub

Classic geography gives a planning baseline: Elwynn → Westfall, Dun Morogh → Loch Modan, Teldrassil → Darkshore, Durotar / Mulgore → the Barrens, or Tirisfal → Silverpine. These are route suggestions, not verified Forever quest sequences.

  3. Later journey · mid-30s to mid-40sThe Riverglades

Blizzard describes a new questing region in this range. Keep it on your launch route; it is beyond the announced beta level caps.

Prepare for the way you play.

Tradeoffs, not a universal “best”

Profession pairings

Editorial starting points using the Classic crafting foundation. Forever recipe value is still being established.

Tailoring + Enchanting

A route toward cloth equipment, bags and disenchanting materials. We would price the useful early craft against its material cost before committing; check the beta trainer’s actual recipes.

Herbalism + Alchemy

A supplies-first alternative when you value recovery and preparation more than maintaining a crafted armor set.

PvP: a different set of decisions

Preserve enough health to survive a burst window while applying pressure. Pick a demon for the situation and coordinate crowd control rather than overwriting an ally’s setup.

Choose your next gear upgrade.

Evaluate spell equipment together with a usable health and mana reserve. Your demon also benefits from the announced scaling changes; exact weights require testing for the chosen build.

New itemization and recipes can change familiar gear choices.

Our reasoning and research

Our recommendations weigh the talent toolkit, player observations and the kind of session you want to have. Early beta impressions do not establish a final best build.

Read the evidence and source notes

Research reviewed September 17, 2026. Demo observations and proposed builds are kept separate from measured beta results.

The strongest-looking demon still needs a fair comparison

Crix reported unusually strong Succubus damage and a Voidwalker holding enemies in his level-38 demo sessions. He explicitly cautioned that the groups and player skill varied.

Spread damage only after the tank can hold it

In an earlier demo report, Crix described Corruption pulling some pack targets by its second or third tick, while acknowledging that unfamiliar tanks could be a factor.

Read who gets the Shadow bonus

The new tooltip specifies damage from your attacks and removes the four-hit consumption wording. Our take: the personal payoff is easier to follow, but this changes the group-utility question.

Changed
Classic Era

A target Shadow vulnerability consumed by four non-periodic sources.

Your Shadow attacks benefit for 12 seconds.

The same rank-one 4% figure now describes a personal benefit with a duration.

This does not establish interaction with every other Shadow debuff.

Sacrifice does not always mean playing alone

The new talent lets a sacrifice effect survive summoning a different demon. That creates a pet-choice puzzle; resummoning the sacrificed demon is explicitly excluded.
