WoW Forever with an Xbox controller: three things to try on PC
Before a long leveling session, get comfortable with your spells, quest items and vendor controls. Here is where to start in the Forever beta.
Start with the things you do between fights
Before settling in with an Xbox controller, try the errands that keep a leveling session moving: put a familiar spell where you want it, find a quest item and visit a vendor. Fighting a few enemies will not tell you how comfortable those menus feel.
That is our starting point for Forever on a Windows PC. Keep a mouse nearby while you learn the controls, then decide which parts of the session you are happy to handle from the controller. Steam Deck setup and performance deserve a separate guide.
Dvalin Gaming’s September 19 walkthrough is a helpful companion. The video below opens at his Gamepad settings section, so you can see the real interface before working through the three tasks.

1. Put a familiar spell within reach
Start with one spell you use often. In Dvalin’s explanation, holding a trigger gives access to another group of assigned actions. See what the interface shows when you hold the relevant trigger, and follow the prompts on your screen.
Choosing a spell for a button is different from changing menu controls or moving the action bars. If you like where your spells are assigned but find the bars awkward to read, you still have a layout question to solve. Treat those as separate decisions instead of rebuilding your whole setup at once.
2. Find the item your quest needs
A tool used during a quest and an item that starts a quest can lead you to different controls. It is easy to miss that distinction when advice simply says “use your quest item.”
At 13:28 in Dvalin’s guide, Executor’s Motivator is highlighted beside the quest tracker, with Select and Bind prompts underneath. His explanation covers choosing the item and assigning it to an action slot. For something you need repeatedly, having it alongside your spells is worth considering.
That example does not resolve Helviath’s separate report of a quest-starting journal in the human starting area lacking the expected use option. If an item gives you trouble, note its exact name. A tool used during a quest may behave differently from an item that starts one.
3. Check which side of the vendor window you are using
At a merchant, buying from their stock and selling from your bag are different actions. Dvalin’s vendor section explains switching to the backpack; the bag view shows its own Sell prompt.
Read that prompt before pressing a button. For your first visit, choose an ordinary low-value item you already intend to sell. Then check that the item leaves your bag and your money changes.
The reason to try this early is simple: a full bag should not be the first time you have to learn the vendor controls. Once these everyday jobs feel familiar, you can spend more of the session on the quests you came to do.
