Before you respec your Forever Warrior, check these beta issues

If your Forever Warrior feels weaker after changing talents, two reported beta issues may be affecting the comparison. Here is what to check, and how the shield talents turn Blocks, Dodges and Parries into Rage.

A weak hit and a late input are different problems

If your Warrior feels worse after a talent change, first ask what actually changed: the damage of a hit, or when your next action happened. Blizzard lists separate issues for those two situations.

Blizzard’s September 18 notice lists a damage problem with glancing blows against higher-level enemies. These are melee hits that deal reduced damage. The notice says they happen at the intended rate, but lose the wrong amount of damage against higher-level targets. It describes the damage reduction against enemies of your own level as correct, making those enemies a better starting point for this comparison.

The other issue affects timing. When you queue Heroic Strike or Cleave for your next melee attack, Blizzard says the spell queue window stops working. That window normally lets you enter your next ability shortly before it can be used. A delay around those attacks may therefore come from this beta issue rather than your talent choices.

How these shield talents generate Rage

Master of Defense can give you 5 Rage when you Dodge or Parry while wearing a shield. With one point, the tooltip gives each Dodge or Parry a 50% chance to grant the Rage. With two points, it happens every time. The second point makes the bonus more dependable; it does not increase the Rage from each trigger.

Shield Specialization works on Blocks instead. At five points, its tooltip adds 5% Block chance and gives you 5 Rage when you Block. Keep those Blocks separate when comparing the talents: Master of Defense rewards Dodges and Parries, while Shield Specialization rewards Blocks.

When Master of Defense gives you Rage
  1. Equip a shield

Master of Defense requires a shield.

  2. Dodge or Parry

Blocks belong to Shield Specialization instead.

  3. Gain 5 Rage when it triggers

Either rank gives 5 Rage. The second rank increases the chance, not the amount.

One point gives each Dodge or Parry a 50% chance to grant 5 Rage. That averages 2.5 Rage per Dodge or Parry on paper, but any single trigger gives 5 Rage, never 2.5.

Based on the talent tooltip, not a combat test. These numbers assume you have room below the Rage cap. They do not tell us how often you will Dodge or Parry in a fight, or how much damage the build will do.

What do you give up for the extra Rage?

Master of Defense needs enemies to attack you before it can help. If you rarely Dodge or Parry during a fight, the second point has few chances to give you more Rage. The tooltip’s percentage alone cannot tell you how much Rage you will gain over the whole fight.

You also have to spend points to reach it. Master of Defense sits in Protection’s third row and requires Shield Specialization. Those earlier points, its own points and the shield in your off-hand all affect what else you can use. Compare the whole build with your alternatives before deciding whether the extra Rage is worth it.

Esfand likes gaining Rage from Dodges and Parries in his September 13 demonstration. Later, at 9:45–10:23, he criticizes restrictions on hybrid weapon builds. We think that is the tradeoff worth watching: shield talents may reward a particular way of playing, but choosing them also narrows your weapon and talent options.

How to compare your builds

Use the same enemy type and level, equipment, buffs and input settings for each comparison. Record talent ranks and the beta build. Change one thing at a time, and keep higher-level fights in a separate group.

For shield builds, count Blocks, Dodges and Parries separately, along with how much Rage each gives you. Note when you are already at the Rage cap. Then ask whether that extra Rage actually helped: could you use an ability sooner, survive a fight or spend less time recovering afterward? A damage total alone will not answer all of those questions.

Does the extra Rage help in a fight?

We think these talents make Protection worth investigating if you want to fight with a shield: Master of Defense rewards Dodges and Parries, and Shield Specialization rewards Blocks. The question is whether that Rage arrives when you need it and lets you use an ability that helps. We have not tested which build performs best.

Keep Blizzard’s reported damage and input issues in mind when comparing builds. Our Warrior guide covers the broader class changes, and the Warrior talent calculator shows the talent ranks and the points needed to reach them.
